The Old Gods

The black goop shifts in the air and spells out the next prompt:

Read a book with a bright or colorful cover

You nod and look around. There are plenty of books around here... maybe you can take one of these? One of them has to have a bright cover, right? Something colorful?

​

The orb follows you while you search, but nothing in the pile is something you can read. It's all in a strange language that you have never seen and definitely cannot read. Honestly, it kind of hurts to look at the marks on the covers. Your vision has spots and your head spins. Still, you can't imagine this is it for you. Not all of the writing looks the same, like they're different languages altogether. Maybe there's one that you can read?

 

"Looking for something?" a whisper-light voice asks. You turn around and see a tall, thin man with no face.

 

Slender Man??

 

The thing does not move its feet, but its torso stretches and slithers toward you. You take a step back and fall over the pile of books behind you. The orb swirls around the man's head a few times, then the man slinks back into a more solid, human shape.

 

"You may know me by many names, but call me Nyarlathotep," it says. "Curious thing, aren't you? Perhaps, if you answer my question correctly, I shall reward you with my services."

 

You sigh and nod. Better the Slender Man-Nyarlathotep thing helps you than devours you.
