FAQ How the readathon Works

Below is all of the information that you might need in order to complete Demonathon.

All prompts, challenges, and helper demons will be added after they are found

(around January 2nd)

Demonathon Gothic Library

  • Though the website opened on Dec 18th, the reading will not begin until Jan 1st. Reading done before then will not count. The last day of the reading period is Jan 31st. You may turn in your final counts through Feb 1st.

  • SIGN THE LEDGER. Sign-ups will be accepted through Jan 1st. This will determine your team. THIS IS ALSO HOW YOU SIGN UP FOR HARD-MODE FOR THE GIVEAWAY (See extra rules below)

  • During the first two weeks, you will be allowed to SEARCH THE LIBRARY to obtain your prompts. There are EIGHT PROMPTS total and ONE GROUP READ. You may do any combination of reading prompts and creative prompts.

    • IF YOU ARE DOING A READING PROMPT, HERE ARE THE RULES:
      • You may elect to do as many or as few prompts as you wish to attempt.
      • You may use as many or as few books to cover the prompts (ie. books can count for multiple prompts)
      • You may use books you are reading for other readathons, so long as they fit the prompts.
      • Each book completed is worth 10 points. If you did not complete the book, you will not earn these points, but you will still earn the number of pages you read.
      • If the book was written by a marginalized author, you gain an extra 5 points regardless if you finished the book or not.
      • Each page read counts as 1 point. Even if you did not finish the book, the pages read still count!
      • All the points earned will be tallied for the TOTAL TEAM POINTS: Team Leraie or Team Gremory. Some prompts count for Leraie and some prompts count for Gremory. If you want one to win over the other, you should favor that person's prompts.
      • You are allowed to read more books, but no extra pages count. Each book must be completed, and they are wroth 10 points each. This is not necessary to complete the readathon, but optional for those who want to add more to their total.
      • Prompts include:
        • [Romance Section] Read a book with at least one romantic plotline
        • [Science Fiction Section] Read one of your most anticipated books you own
        • [Astronomy Section] Read a book with stars/space on the cover
        • [Travel Section] Read a book there the protagonist travels
        • [Horror Section] Read an intimidating book
        • [History Section] Read something non-fiction
        • [Occult Section] Read a book with magic in it
        • [Self-Help] Read something cozy/re-read a book
  •
    • IF YOU ARE DOING A CREATIVE PROMPT, HERE ARE THE RULES:
      • You may do as many or as few prompts as you wish to attempt.
      • You may use as many or as few creative projects to cover the prompts (ie. projects can count for multiple prompts).
      • A creative project is defined as anything that you have created to present as ART: writing, drawing, music, acting, etc. It can be as long or as short as you wish it to be, though you only have the month of January to complete them (so, short is probably key). If it is part of a larger project (ex. a scene from a novel, or a page from a larger comic series), it still counts.
      • Each prompt completed is worth 250 points. To "complete a project" you must post it on social media, Discord, or youtube (even if it is only a few lines, a completed sketch, or a video that is unedited)
      • If you have a project that is fully polished (as in, you personally would release this and be proud of it), it is worth an additional 50 points.
        • IF YOU USED A PROJECT TO COMPLETE MORE THAN ONE PROMPT you only get these 50 points once.
      • All the points earned will be tallied for the TOTAL TEAM POINTS: Team Leraie or Team Gremory. Some prompts count for Leraie and some promts count for Gremory. If you want one demon to win over the other, you should favor that person's prompts.
      • The only reading you should complete is the group read, "Concerning the Upstairs Bathroom" by Kiera Lesley
      • Prompts include:
        • [Romance Section] Create a scene with a romantic relationship

        • [Science Fiction Section] Create something that excites you

        • [Astronomy Section] Create something with wishes involved

        • [Travel Section] Create a faraway land

        • [Horror Section] Create something that scares you

        • [History Section] Create something based in historic fact or practice

        • [Occult Section] Create something with a magical vibe

        • [Self-Help] Re-create/edit an old work

  • Announce your TBR when you are ready. Though your TBR is able to change on a whim, please announce your TBR by Jan 1st (TBR also includes creative projects). Don't forget to @demonathon !

  • During the first two weeks, you will be allowed to SEARCH THE GRAVEYARD for challenges 3-5. The first two challenges are to announce your TBR and share your demon on social media/youtube.

    • Every 3 days a new part of the Library will open up and a poll will be taken. YOUR POLLING RESULTS WILL CHANGE WHICH CHALLENGES EVERYONE RECEIVES.

    • Challenges are worth 5 points each

    • All challenges are optional (but highly encouraged!)

    • Challenges include:

      • Post your TBR (even if it is only tentative)

      • Share your Demon

      • (more will be updated once all Challenges are decided!)

    • Challenges can be shared via social media, Discord, and youtube. Don't forget to @demonathon and #Demonathon so we can share!

  • Don't forget to add your point totals and points in the SPREADSHEETS.

    • The spreadsheet will be made available on Jan 2nd (once the sign-ups are closed and I can list everyone in their teams). Look for announcements!

    • There are 3 tabs: 2 for Normal Mode and 1 for Hard Mode. Depending on how you signed up, you will be listed under that tab (ex. you signed up for Gremory, so you are ONLY listed under Gremory).

    • Only work on YOUR line.

    • If you are summoning a NEW demon (or summoning for the first time), the points matter! There is a secret number of points needed to complete your contract. (It's not hard, I promise!)

    • Points can be tallied up through Feb 1st. If you did not finish a book, PLEASE PUT HOW MANY PAGES YOU READ. You will earn your team more points!

    • On Feb 2nd, the winning team will be announced and the ENDING to Demonathon will be opened. Please check your emails for the link to the ending! THE TEAM WHO WINS THE MOST POINTS WILL DETERMINE THE ENDING!

  • Use the Helper Demons if you need to!

    • Helper Demons are optional but highly encouraged. They are here to help you complete the readathon with as little stress as possible.

    • Helper demons can be found inside the Disappearing Library as you venture.

    • Helper demons include:

      • Phenex: Use a book/project that does not fit the prompt

      • Naberius: One prompt that is meant for LERAIE will count for GREMORY instead

      • Foras: One prompt that is meant for GREMORY will count for LERAIE instead

      • Malphas: Destroy your TBR (and retain all your projected points. if attempting hard mode, you are ineligible for the giveaway)

    • You may use all of the helper demons ONCE throughout the readathon. (This changes if you attempt Hard Mode.)

    • If you are using a demon that switches points from one demon to another, DO NOT add pages until the END of the spreadsheet. This also goes for the 250 creative points for a prompt. Still use the checkboxes for completed prompts and marginalized authors.

    • You do not need to announce the helper demon until the END of the readathon, and then only on the spreadsheet.

HARD MODE: THE READING NOOK

Attempting Hard Mode means you automatically win your contract (so long as you complete the readathon)

A few rules change when entering Hard Mode:

  • You must complete ALL rooms and ALL challenges. You may use any mix of reading and creative prompts as you see fit, but you must complete eight prompts and the group read.

  • You may NOT use a book for more than one prompt (ie. eight prompts means eight different books).

  • You may NOT use more than one project for a prompt (ie. eight prompts means eight different projects).

  • You may attempt both all creative and all reading prompts, but it is not necessary to complete the readathon.

  • You MAY add more books to your TBR at any time. Each book is worth 10 extra points. NO EXTRA PAGES COUNT. No extra projects count.

  • There are two winners: One Returning and one Newbie. The winners will receive a book of their choice delivered via Amazon. Please have your wishlists updated and your addresses correct!

  • If you use Malphas (AKA destroy your TBR and give up) you still get the good ending, but you are inelligable for the giveaway

Regarding the Library:

The Disappearing Library is 9 rooms that are sealed by passwords. You must find the password before you are able to proceed.

Passwords come in the form of "Tarot Cards" given to you by demons found in the library. You were given your first tarot card by Gremory in the Cabins.

We suggest you keep a note handy for the passwords in case you want to return to a section of the library ;)

If you forget your passwords (and don't want t go through all the rooms again), you may be able to convince a helpful barista to give you a card after Jan 2nd.

The Library will always be open, but it's best that you explore sooner rather than later.

You must announce your TBR on or before Jan 1st.

You are allowed to change your TBR at any time, but it is important for your "projected point total" in case you decide to use a Helper Demon ;)
