the graveyard

The name shows up SARAH MAYHEW and you peel back to show her death date. It seems impossible, though. She died this year! How could a stone look like this after only a few months? You're not sure, but you feel compelled to clean off the moss at least. The stone requires much more cleaning than you're able to accomplish now, but the moss should come off at least.

Lower, you find more words. The whole headstone reads like this:

Sarah Mayhew

Born 1980

Died 2022

Proud Singer, Dancer, and Actress

We Miss You Dearly

Challenge #3:

Share something you're proud of

(This can be an achievement, a personal goal, an art piece, etc.)

You wonder what kind of person she was as you clean off the grave. Suddenly, you get the strange feeling that someone is watching you. You stop and look around, but no one is there. The Library doors are still standing shut behind you. A chill runs down your back, but you push away the feeling. There's more work to be done on the headstone.

"Hey," you hear, and you jump. You frantically look around and find a young woman wearing a pretty black dress with a full skirt and white ruffled lace at the neck and cuffs. She has sunken eyes and a thousand-yard stare. "Thank you. I didn't think anyone would hear me."

You ask who she is.

She wrinkles her brow. "Sarah," she says. "You just cleaned off my grave."

You stare in shock. She looks rather solid, but the longer you look, the less solid she seems. It's just at the edges, but it's almost as if her outline is blurred.

"Would you mind helping me?" she asks. "I can't seem to find the rest of my family. I can't read the names on the gravestones. There's moss and dirt, and I can't clean them off to see who's who."

You ask why she can't find them by walking around. To you, it seems likely that she's bound to run into them sooner or later if she wanders a bit.

She shakes her head. "Sometimes they're asleep, and it can take a while for them to wake up. Besides, it's rude to wake up someone who's a complete stranger. I don't want to wake someone up on accident."

Reluctantly, you agree. She says that her parents should be buried together, and her older brother should be somewhere. So, two graves to find, and three people to gather.
